Curator's Notes
Medicine (1900–1907) was a monumental, highly controversial ceiling painting by Austrian Symbolist master Gustav Klimt. Commissioned in 1894 for the Great Hall of the University of Vienna, it stood as a radical departure from traditional academic art, sparking a fierce "aesthetic civil war" before its tragic destruction by Nazi forces at the end of World War II.
